David Lloyd George was a Liberal politician, best known as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1916 until 1922. He is sometimes described as "The People's Prime Minister"—a title he accepted and used with pride. After a distinguished career in Parliament, he successfully contested the Caernarvon constituency in a by-election in 1913 and was elected for a further four years. He became a member of the cabinet as President of the Board of Trade in 1916, and later served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1916 to 1919, Secretary of State for War from 1919 to 1921, and as Home Secretary from 1921 to 1922

In December 1918, Lloyd George was narrowly defeated by H H Asquith as leader of his party. He then served as Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1922 to 1923. He took over as leader of the Liberal Party in April 1923 and led it back into power under David Lloyd George at the 1922 general election—the first time it had been returned since 1906.
